Most Memorable NYFW Moments

It's Fashion Week Friday!

Just a few weeks ago, New York Fashion Week was in full throttle, from the A-list guests, endless runway shows, and the sick exclusive after parties (not you Alexander Wang), needless to say if you weren't at NYFW then you are irrelevant, like me. During NYFW, I did what any crazed and devoted fashion follower would do and stalked the whole week through the NYFW Snapchat account, Instagram, and basically every other resource. I made sure to get the scoop on anything and everything during fashion week so I did not feel left out. After doing my research and getting in on the madness, all I can say was NYFW was full of surprises, from political statements to surprising guests. Here is your scoop on the week's most memorable moments!

Shhh Marc Jacobs!

Marc Jacobs kept it simple and silent, literally, during this years runway show. Jacobs wanted all eyes on the clothing with only the sound of the heels hitting the pavements as the models strut their stuff walking down the partial outdoor show. There were about 320 guests seated on rows of folding chairs without any decorations, lighting, or a soundtrack. Marc Jacobs shook things up during NYFW, but are we really surprised?

Raf Simon's debut at Calvin Klein

Clear the runway for Raf Simon, Belgian fashion designer who has made his way from being the creative director for Christian Dior to being the chief creative officer at Calvin Klein. Raf's collection for Calvin made its awaiting debut during fashion week, leaving everyone in awe. Featuring both men and women models in similar looks, symbolizing no gender specifics with looks that a minimal and classic aesthetic. Simon spoke on the reinventing of Calvin Klein saying, “Calvin Klein is not only about iconic underwear and jeans — it’s about so much more.” Raf Simon has truly shook the brand and definition of fashion intervention.

No After Party

Alexander Wang ditched the after party and made his show a party itself. Featuring a nocturnal setting with kegs of Peroni, loud music, and no seating for the guests. The show was at RKO Hamilton Theater on Broadway and 146th street and was set up as a dark and rough look with an underground mosh pit mood with red spot lights beaming. Models were seen walking down the runway with tights saying "No After Party" so clearly this year we have to say goodbye to the Mc. Donald's truck and 7-11 Slurpee's that he brought last year.

Madeline Stuart's 21 Reasons Why

Madeline Stuart, a young model who was born with down syndrome, has launched her own clothing brand called "21 Reasons Why" and got the opportunity to show off her work during NYFW. Stuart described the collection as "mirroring her own daily style" which was a modern flair on trendy daywear. The name of the brand, 21 Reasons Why was inspired by her passion for inclusivity in the fashion industry as well as her 21st chromosome. This won't be the last we see of Madeline.

Hot Convict

Yes, there was an ex-criminal on the runway, and yes he is dreamy. Other than being known as the hot convict, his name is Jeremy Meeks and he walked for Philipp Plein during NYFW. Meeks became known once his mug shot was posted on the Facebook page of Stockton Police Department from being arrested on felony weapon charges when police pulled him over and found an unregistered and loaded gun in his vehicle (and well a little marijuana too). Then while he was taken into custody, he was contacted and signed with a modeling agency and got the chance to kick of his career once he was let out of prison after 27 months. Loaded or not loaded gun, he still cute doe.

Diversity isn't a trend

Designers did not just use Fashion Week to make a political statement, but to show the growing change in the amount of different races of models that would be shown. Fashion Spot recorded for the fall 2017 season, 31.5% of models were non-white. As well as six of the ten most booked models this season were women of color. With 2016 NYFW still being the most diverse Fashion Week, NYFW '17 was full of promising changes and improvements, politically and historically.

Women's March at Mara Hoffman

Many designers decided to make a political statement this week, including designer Mara Hoffman who invited the co-founders of  "Women's March on Washington" to open her show. The members opened the show with remarks and readings from women authors and activists such as Maya Angelou, Angela Davis, as well as their mission statement. Mara Hoffman's collection that was shown was inspired by "women whose songs are not yet sung, the allies, the named, and the nameless". This was more than an upscale fashion show for Mara, it was an opportunity to give a voice of unity and feminism and tie it to the industry. Girl power Mara.

All hail Yeezy

New York Fashion Week is not the same without Mr. West. Even though the CFDA, Council of Fashion Designers of America, was not aware he'd be in the building. There was no surprise that Kanye stirred up chaos by not even consulting those in charge of the NYFW that he would be scheduling his show. More surprises arrived once the show started, beginning with models projected on a screen before hitting the runway and only limiting the show to close friends, family and buyers. Those in attendance included Anna Wintour, Kim Kardashian, Zoe Kravitz, Tyga, and so on. Model lineup included Teyana Taylor, Sofia Richie, and even the recent Miss Minnesota contestant Halima Aden. Kanye's show featured his designs of faux fur, sneakers, and denim.

20 sneakers that aren't white converse

Hello galpals!

I am finally back in action with making sure I post once every week to keep everyone updated and informed about the latest and greatest. So before my usual blog post on post #NYFW article, I wanted to keep it fun and insightful this week before getting into the chaos of New York Fashion Week. As all of you know I currently attend Missouri State University, so I am surrounded by the "typical American college fashion" scene. College fashion is different for every university since there are many demographics that come into play such as location, gender, income, etc.. But one style still to this day I have seen which I am kind of over, okay really over, is white converse. Sorry if I offend any girl who treats her white converse like gold (you know who you are) but they have got to go.

I remember getting my pair of white converse like it was yesterday, although instead it was about five years ago. You heard that right, they have been in style for more than five years, talk about a long-term trend. I probably wore my white converse everyday because they were in the "in-shoe" for every girl. You could wear them with literally anything, to school, to parties, and even to bed (yeah no). White converse was equivalent to black leggings, girls I knew had more than one pair. So down to the knitty and gritty. It is time for white converse to be banished and to be replaced once and for all. Now you are probably wondering, well what other sneakers should I wear? Here, I comprised a list of other sneakers you can wear besides those white canvas made things. Don't worry, you can thank me later.

Brand Spotlight: Mission Statement by Hilary Swank

Happy Friyay!

Getting back into the groove of school has been quite the struggle to say the least and it has not even been a month after winter break. I am enjoying all of my classes so far including one in particular, I am taking a visual merchandising course where I am able to create store front displays, learn how retailers create their floor plans through design and marketing techniques, and the internal aspects of what really attracts consumers to enter a store and make a purchase. I am loving the class so far because it is hands on and interesting to see the techniques and secrets that retailers use to attract customers without them even noticing. Okay your probably wondering why I am blabbing on about my classes and why this has to do with anything, so I will tell you why it is relevant.

A few days ago, I was assigned a capstone project which I requires me to create a brand from head to toe, which requires me to create a customer profile, mission statement, merchandise, marketing objectives, all of the works basically. As I was brainstorming what category of merchandise I want my brand to sell, the first thing that came to my mind is athleisure, a style trend that has been becoming widely popular, and it is my go to style. I chose athleisure targeted to women as my focal point and I began researching athleisure lines for women to get more of a grasp on the importance of this growing style. While I was researching, I came across Hilary Swank. You may know Hilary Swank as the actress who plays the lead female roles in films such as Million Dollar Baby, Freedom Writers, and oh cannot forget P.S. I Love You (PSA: do not watch without a box of tissues). Not only is Hilary Swank a successful actress, she is also the creator of a recently launched athleisure line called Mission Statement.

Mission Statement is an athletic wear brand for women that Hilary has been working on for years. She was cool ning a new term for the athleisure style called "aesthetic-wear", clothing woman can wear so they can feel comfortable and chic that she thought would carry her from her morning workouts to the rest of her day. Women in today's society are not seen as only stay at home care takers anymore, they have busier schedules than ever, leaving no time to change clothes while planning on when to pick up the kids, go to meetings, and run errands.  She named the brand Mission Statement to remind women to always be in touch with their personal goals and aspirations in life, to become their genuine self. Mission Statement was years in the making for Hilary since maintaining a busy work schedule in the film industry was her entire life. It was until her father had a lung transplant and she being his sole caretaker for 12 weeks  she then found the opportunity to focus and build the brand.

Hilary stressed to make sure that each piece of clothing is machine-washable and also included four dimensional-stretch fabrics imported from Paris so that the clothing will never rip or unravel. Hilary's focus was on making these pieces performance wear, without looking like it. From temperature regulating cashmere tops to washable leather pants, Hilary strived to hit the mark on her line to be considered high fashion yet day to day clothing women can wear that you can actually be active in. Mission Statement offers items such as sports bras, arm warmers, leggings, tank tops, and even leather jackets. Prices range from $125 for one of the sports bras to $1,150 for one of the leather jackets, but hey who said fashion was cheap?

Mission Statement was launched on October 18th after two years of designing and working on creating a powerful mission statement, literally.

Here are some of my favorite items from the line!

ZING CROP, $525.00
MINI-BREAK PLAYSUIT, $375.00

TRIPLE BACK BRA, $185.00

LEG WARMERS, $125.00
STRIDES RUN TIGHT, $195.00

Okay so down to the nitty gritty, sheerly you guys will love this up and coming trend (sorry I had too). Lately I have been doing my usual trend research whether its by going on vogue.com, stalking celebrities on Instagram, or going on wgsn.com, I stumbled upon seeing more and more women wearing sheer tops. Sheer tops are infamous for being see through which has caused a lot of jaws dropping, yes Bella Hadid we all saw you in Paris wearing a sheer top with nothing under. Sheer tops have been stumbling there way back on the fashion radar and I can't wait to see how the style unravels. The rising popularity of the sheer top has been spreading worldwide so I want to share a few ideas from those who have been rocking the sheer top so you get some inspiration for how you want to style your sheer!

Okay readers so here is just some fashion inspo to help guide you on what to wear with a sheer top. The great thing about wearing sheer is that you can pair it with any style bralette underneath or if your feeling daring, maybe just statement pasties (or nothing) under it. You can find sheer tops from any store from Forever 21, Urban Oufitters, TopShop, and so on! Good luck!
